Things to do in Portland

Our team is going to play in Portland Cup at the end of the month. Anyone have any good recommendations for things to do especially the parents?

Portland is a super fun city and a foodie's heaven. Which area are you staying in? Portland is divided into NE, NW, SE and SW quadrants. Each has its own flavor. I can give you more specific info based on which area you are staying in and how far you are willing to travel.

I wouldn't waste time at the Adidas or Nike stores unless you've never been to one.
VooDoo Donuts is worth a visit - but be prepared for a long line.

McMenamins Kennedy School in NE Portland - SO MUCH FUN. A former elementary school converted into a hotel with multiple restaurants and bars. Super fun place for the over 21 crowd (the under 21 crowd can enjoy the restaurant and the movie theater in the former gynmasiusm but not the 7 bars in the various former classrooms).

Fun/Funky areas with lots of good restaurants, food trucks (Portland loves their food trucks), stores, etc: Mississippi Avenue, Alberta Street, Hawthorne Street, Sellwood

If you like Asian food go to Pok Pok and have their Pok Pok Wings. To die for.

Are the Thorns or Timbers playing? Such a fun place to watch a soccer game!

The Portland Farmers Market is one of the best I've ever been to.

If I think of anything else I'll send it your way.

I would recommend Voodoo Doughnuts Too (much shorter lines then the orginial); Salt and Straw for ice cream; Happy Valley Station (different types of food trucks), and Multnomah Falls.

We just came back from Portland. 2 things I highly recommend. Have lunch at the food truck row in DT Portland. It's by the Ariel Tram terminal. Multnomah Falls is 45 minutes away. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to hike to the top and back.

Take a side trip to Astoria (hour west of Portland). Nice coastal town where they filmed Goonies and Kindergarten Cop. Great visitors center with actually a lot to do and see in the town and along the coast. The Tillamook cheese factory is about 30 minutes south of Astoria and they have a good tour. The drive is beautiful right along the coast. There is a small town about half way to Tillamook that has a beachside amusement park. The kids (15-16 y/o at the time) had a blast on our one day outing to Astoria and the surrounding area.

Take a 1/2 day trip to Mt Saint Helens. Very interesting and scenic. Kids also loved that trip.

We always stop in Medford, OR when driving to and from Portland/Seattle/Vancouver. Medford has a couple gems that make it worth the stop. If any of the families drove, tell them to stop at Jaspers Café in Medford, OR. Some of the best burgers (about 50 different types) in the Northwest.

Rogue Creamery. Awesome cheeses, with one of the best Blue Cheese selections on the west coast. Limited, but good food.

Buttercloud Bakery and Café. Great breakfast especially their biscuit sandwiches.

Sounds great! Have to put it on the itinerary

Also hit up the Portland Food Cart/Trucks on Alder Street. Good for lunch and a wide variety. Nice setting.

The other place we always stop at is Mary's Pizza Shack in Anderson, CA. (Anderson is just south of Redding). The pizza is good and the pesto bread twists are awesome. It is a good place to stop before you begin that long boring drive between Redding and Sactown. We usually call ahead and just stop long enough to stretch our legs and bathroom break. The pizza is thin crust so it is easy to eat and drive. A lot better than a fast food burger bomb.

Whatever you do, do not stop at the Oregon Mystery Vortex that is in the Medford area. We made that mistake once. There are signs for it all over the place and we gave into the kids one year. Just keep driving, you won't miss anything.

We liked the Voodoo Donuts in Eugene near U of Oregon better than the ones in Portland. Mainly because there were no lines and the setting is nice.

This thread is a great example of how cool this forum can be.

PKs Stink asked about Portland based on their upcoming tourney.

Now that I've read all the responses with cool things to do there, I find myself wanting to plan a trip!
