If you miss the basics you do not look professional and now every parent on the sideline thinks they know the game better than you. Not going back to get the coin is just lazy..
This is one part of the game that should be simple. I always try to look the part, and do the simple things correctly. If you can not do the basics correct, like remember your coin, flag, or your uniform how can you start the game with the spectators respecting you. Its like refs who do drop balls to the keeper from the half line. If your that lazy walk into the 18 and drop it for the keeper, but show that you know the simple things like how to do a restart.

Agreed. Big mistake from the FA in making this such a big deal. That being said, for those who say he should have gone and got his coin are not getting that it was televised and his bag probably back in the referee changing area. He could hardly have jogged back under the stands for the coin while the telecast waited. What looks more unprofessional is delaying the game while you run around trying to locate something as trivial as a coin. Good on the ref for improvising and going to rock paper scissors. We all make mistakes, it's how you respond to those mistakes that's important. I'm sure this ref will never forget his coin again. A 3 week ban is an overreaction, a reprimand, at worst, was warranted. Obviously, the FA is more concerned about form than substance.

Still..if anywhere, this is something I would have expected to see in Scotland. Previous gaffes:
Incidentally, how the SFA thought allowing referees to be sponsored by Specsavers was a good idea is beyond me. Ensures referees are shown no respect from the start.
Sage Major is, in fact, a referee.Lets see, 3 games into the day, with only 10 minutes between matches. U15 age group and we're running late. I'll guess I'll be "lazy" and pass the sprint and wasted minute to go fetch my backup coin and just do ro-sham-bo it. This kids like it better anyways. Who watches the coin toss anyways? Hard to think it is reasonable to say that referee's doing all these matches are lazy.
I have a feeling that SageMajor is going to think that he knows more than a referee no matter how the kickoff is decided.
Why the need for back up coins? Why not just carry a coin with you to the kick off? I can whistle pretty loudly without a whistle. So do most people. Does that mean if we forget our whistles we shouldn't run back to get it and simply whistle the game without it? If not, why?Lets see, 3 games into the day, with only 10 minutes between matches.
