Tournament Profits

Put aside the surf machine, anyone have a real world estimate how much a mid-level Presidio tournament makes in profit per team entered for the hosting club?

I dont know the answer. I think it's a bit less than what you probably think. But for most clubs there is usually one or 2 people that will earn a nice chunk of change from a good sized tournament. Usually someone at a Director level within the club.

Yes, I do. Every tournament has a "break even" point. For most it between 50 to 70 teams to cover all the costs, including field set up, assignor and referee fees, field fees, trophies, medical, insurance, Got Soccer fee, etc. With so many tournaments every weekend, it is becoming hard and harder to hit that break even point, but with clubs of good size that have reciprocity agreements in place with other tournaments its easier to do.

What you currently have in SD are basically two operators Raffi (PSIsoccer.org) and Anthony (STS Specialists) and their respective companies doing tournaments for the smaller clubs (for sanctioning purposes). Their deal is to basically split the profits, so its not unusual that a club will clear about $5k to $10k per tournament, sometimes less and sometimes more depending on the number of teams.

The mid-level play at 4-6 different venues are avoided by many teams because coaches and parents are running all over the place. The tournaments at a single venue tend to draw many more teams because the coaches (especially those that have multiple teams) can walk from field to field, as opposed to hop in a car and drive to another venue. The problem with almost all of these mid-level tournaments are the fields are crap because they are using schools and parks.

To get around crap fields and make their tournament more attractive, the tournaments need to use a complex (Del Mar, Oceanside, Galway, etc.) These complexes charge between $500 to $800 per field, plus other amenities (golf carts, etc.), but provide a very clean set up field (although parking is paid and often on dirt). The additional cost for fields is simply built into the price ... $595 becomes $695. Coaches and DOC's don't care because that price is generally just passed onto the parents .... (let's see $595 divided by 16 = $38 per parent or $695/16 = $44 per parent) and it makes for a better overall experience.

Got Soccer fee?

Got Soccer fee?

Got Soccer or some of the other Tournament software system out there all charge a fee, which can be based on team ($18/team or a percentage 2% per team fee or whatever). These platforms all cost money.

GotSoccer or Total Global Sports (TGS) seem to be the 2 main scheduling programs in use.

Question - Is TGS owned/invented/invested by someone associated with Slammers? Seems that Slammers, CDA, South etc all use TGS for their tournaments. And most others seem to use GotSoccer.

GotSoccer isn't perfect- but at least it lets you quickly look up recent game history and sometimes a roster. TGS doesn't show any of this.

Thank you! That was really interesting!

TGS is owned by Steven Patterson (Slammers FC Yorba Linda), HC at Foothill HS - Girls, so yes, there is a connection.

There are a few more out there. Affinity (Cal South uses) which is now owned by Dicks, Sports Engine (formerly SI) and a few others I've seen at the USC expo. Its also a bit regional with some others dominating in other markets.
