Referees

Saw a drop kick between two players this week end... WHY?!

A kick-off starts both halves of a match, both halves of extra time and restarts play after a goal has been scored. Free kicks (direct or indirect), penalty kicks, throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks are other restarts (see Laws 13–17). A dropped ball is the restart when the referee stops play and the Law does not require one of the above restarts.

Law 8, FIFA/IFAB LOTG

Do you mean a drop ball? If you are going to bitch about referees’ at least get the wording right. And yes I know that contested drop balls are no longer a thing.

The most common usage of a dropped ball in the good old days was in situations where the referee could not determine who had last touched a ball that went off the field.

That is not the proper use of a drop ball. Ref is suppose to make a call one way or the other.

It was used when the ref had to stop play for things like injury or outside interference. Now all drop balls are uncontested

Whether proper or not, it was the most common. The other situations that called for dropped balls rarely occurred.
