04 Girls GA College Playoff Yellow Card or Not?

SILVER ELITE
Our 04 Legends team had a tough game against a very good Virginia team this weekend. We tied 2-2 and ref was pretty generous on letting the girls play it out. Here is one example of a foul that represented pretty much the mood of the game. I will agree that we deserved a few yellow cards as well. I'm not bashing on this ref but as a ref myself I would call this a yellow on any day of the week. As you can see, the tackle never touched the ball. So all feedback welcome. Do you think this warranted a yellow card?

I am not a ref. It is possible that due to the angle that the ref has to view that tackle, it looked like the defender got the ball since it changed directions.

It looks like the ref called the foul. From that point, it is all subjective.

My daughter gets taken down like that a lot. And plenty of hip checking by defenders along the touchline with no intention of even going for the ball.. Rarely see a yellow card. I just think she needs to get better at distributing quicker and /or evading the defender.

I swear the dad saying, "come on ref" sounded like me during HSS. HSS that would have been the defensive play of the week. I do like that the girls are trying but that play right there is why we have so many ACL injuries and broken noses and legs. Both players can get hurt on that. No need for that type of tackle, moo!!!

If no yellow- I hope there was some "street justice" later in the game. That was a lazy and unnecessary foul.

He was reaching for his pocket to show the yellow, but when all the parents starting screaming "that's a card ref" he decided he wouldn't let their mouths dictate the game.

I see a fair amount of what you refer to here and agree with your advice. The game is as it is called - adjust accordingly. Although I do wish they called more fouls and gave more yellow cards for these types of plays.

This might very well be true and one of my points in my post on this forum to all you experienced refs. Shouldn't we present a card in this case to protect our girls so escalations and retaliations don't occur? I think it's terrible that some refs (most refs are good) let this kind of play continue only to end up with torn ACLs at the end. And not to be sexist here but I have NEVER seen a boys game (in club or HS) where someone got tripped like this without a card. It seems like some refs let the girls kill each other on the field while refs tighten up calls on the boys side.

With the caveat that I don't watch many boys' soccer games, my impression is that the threshold for cards in girls' soccer is considerably higher than in professional soccer. I am not sure why that is. I agree that the higher threshold promotes more of the same and we should do a better job of protecting the girls. Also, tighter calls will promote skill over the physical side of the game. That's also a win in my view.

Getting the ball is a factor but does not guarantee it is not a foul. The rules on fouls when tackling are subjective (see bold below). It's interesting the level of subjectivity built into the rule when compared to how precise and consistent they attempt to make the definitions of penalties in American football.

Slide tackles from the rear offer additional assessments by the referee. Frequently, the attacker will fall with less contact by the tackler. The referee must determine if the tackler’s actions reached the level of “careless, reckless or with excessive force.” The mere fact that the tackle was from the rear does not constitute a foul. Tackles from the rear should be regarded with suspicion and draw close inspection.

A lot of non-referees here asking good questions, and hopefully learning some things. While yes, a referee can possibly prevent fouls from continuing to get out of control later in the game, it is still not their responsibility how any player acts at any moment. When a coach continues to let their player act like this, there is a shared responsibility with the player and the coach.

The personal behavior of the player and coach are what started the problem of the fouls. The referee is to blame for the continuation of the fouls because the ref is being paid to be responsible for stopping that type of behavior by using his warning, yellow card, or red card.

I don't think that is fair to say a referee is to blame for a particular foul. A referee cannot physically stop a player from doing what they want to do.
