How does Surf Cup provide tournament ranking points?

Surf Cup is no longer using gotsoccer to support their tournaments, but instead using their own tournament scheduling/scoring system. In the past, Surf Cup has been a yearly must-go tournament, but since the tournament ranking points is no longer reflected in gotsoccer I'm curious how this changes the So Cal tournament soccer scene.

With Surf Cup using their own rankings it appears this will impact how they place teams in the future. There has been debate/turmoil how Surf placed teams with in the flights. Example--in 2019 the top G07 team (per YSR) was placed in Super Black. This team handled every opponent with ease. They had also played a vast majority of the CA teams in BoftheB flight and defeated them. I am thinking this may be a more sound and accurate method for those teams that play in their tournaments, but I doubt it will impact the soccer scene overall.

The main attraction at Surf is the teams, not the event.

If Surf gets the brackets wrong too often, top teams will start to go somewhere else. Surf has a lot to lose if they ignore YSR in favor of some unpublished home-brew ranking system based on tournaments.

They already have and teams have not attended.

YSR is very good for u-littles but highly inaccurate once teams get to U-15 and older.......

What works better for olders?

The basic YSR idea seems solid. Blowouts seem to mess up the ratings. And isolated cliques are hard to evaluate by any measure. But those are the only problems I have noticed.

Nothing for olders, unfortunately..... I just use ysr to look at matchups and results not ranking as it is so inaccurate....

As you hinted blowouts RULE the older YSR ratings and in ECNL (and last year DA) blowouts are far more rare than in SCDSL..... some software tweaking could fix it but it’s been like this for a couple years and it is a pity.....

Surf Cup results don’t seem to have been picked up in YSR yet. Not that any ranking system is that valuable especially with touch thin play but interesting that they haven’t been pulled in. Surf affiliated scheduling through whatever platform is being used here, filming through NextPro, team payment management through Groundwork, scouting through ScoutZone or whatever, all on top of the tenured affiliate program and surf cup sports. Business development group has been busier than the soccer development group :)

Wouldn't it be Gotsoccer's decision not to use Surf Cup results?

What age group are you looking for?

When I look now I see the feed from “surfcupsports.com” for a number of teams that was not there the last time I looked. So looks like that has been tapped into. There are still a number of teams through that while they have a score posted from surf olders you can’t click through the team name to see other games and they have no numerical ranking assigned to the team. I’m guessing that since is one of the first or second tourneys for a number of teams and since this a new source for a feed that’s some combination of too few games to be listed and/or trouble with matching how exactly surf showed the team name to an existing team in the YSR database?

Disagree. I used YSR to help me call the U16 girls at Surf and I was very very accurate. Much tougher now with no games, no league games, and all this craziness. Still the best tool that we have.

You can also help out YSR by connecting two teams that just have slightly different names but are actually the same team.

Where YSR falls apart is related to GA(DA)/ECNL and I am guessing MLS Next. The reason is that those are closed leagues. They rarely play teams outside their league. So it makes it harder to gauge how those teams would do against each other or vs competition outside those closed leagues.

Further making it difficult is that for instance DA games didn't always get pulled in. OR stated another way you might not have found a specific DA team. Today looking at an age group or 2 in AZ I see a GA team in one age group and not another. Nobody from the older age group team has bothered to contact YSR to get listed, etc. They don't care. Parents care a lot more about rankings at the younger ages. As teams get older, parents worry a lot less about rankings...so it seems at older age groups the info isn't updated or corrected like you see at the younger ages.

Yes YSR makes it easy to contact them and update who a team is...or combine/connect a team if the names are slightly different, but that takes a team manager or some other parent to contact YSR. A good amount of teams from GA/DA are not listed. Less so it seems with ECNL...but the issue remains there.

Since my kid hasn't been in a league outside of ECNL or DA for years now, I have not kept track of how good/bad YSR is at the older ages in the AZ state leagues. Maybe the same issue exists at the olders.

All that said for the youngers YSR is hands down lots better vs gotsoccer.com. Not even close.
