Unemployment $$$ for Referees

My daughter is a full time college student (junior year) that beginning in August 2019 (school started) got all of her spending money from refereeing. She made roughly $1500 as a referee in 2019 and used the current inability to referee as justification to file for unemployment. She was approved for $150 a week plus the CARES Act bonus of $600 per week ($3000 a month). She will get the California money until she Is able to referee again. We are not sure how long she will get the CARES Act money. It was a fairly easy process to apply. I would suggest that anyone who has kids that referee to have them apply. Or if you are currently unemployed due to COVID-19 to list refereeing as one of your sources of income when you apply for unemployment. It may help increase the amount you get weekly.

I wouldn't characterize the young lady's act as immoral and/or a fraud. She's unable to work, filled out the paperwork and that's what the (insane) rules give her. I'm seeing articles every day that are reporting situations where employees don't want to come back to work because they're making more in unemployment than they would if they were working. That's really a perverse incentive that every one of us who pay taxes is subsidizing. The blame lies with our politicians that do this stupid stuff, not the unemployed people who now lack a source of income.

I believe the CARES Act $600/week "bonus" expires on July 31 and I hope that it's one thing that doesn't get extended.

Also, I hope she will consider sharing some of her windfall with people who aren't in as fortunate a situation by donating to a food bank or other charitable organization.

She made $1500 in one year from refereeing and is a full time college student and now she is able to $3000 a month? Seems immoral and a fraud to me.
My educated guess is she made $1500 PER MONTH in 2019. I don't think you earned enough credit for Californian employment benefit if you only made $1,500 per year.

If you have a problem with the CARES Act benefits, contact your Congressman and complain to them. The House Democrats wanted to give out even more money. In 2019 for work she refereed and worked at a physical therapy clinic up until she started the SDSU fall semester in July. School and her Kinesiology internship make it impossible for her to work. Her spring internship does not require weekend hours like fall and winter sports seasons. She had planned to referee every weekend beginning in February through mid-July when she would have to start her fall internship. The money she would have made would have got her through her senior year of college. I see no problem with her taking advantage of whatever the government wants to give her. My wife is furloughed without pay ($10k a month) and she is only getting $4200 in unemployment. My daughter is also under a CalVet full tuition waiver scholarship (I am a disabled Vet) and she cannot make more than $11k a year or she doesn’t get free tuition. The government has wasted my tax dollars for years, so I have no problem getting free money.

In 2019 she made $9200 working at a physical therapy clinic which the State factors into her unemployment benefit. They loook at the last 18 months of employment.

Wild question but, did she report the referee income in the taxes? I go to college and tryna figure out if this situation would apply to me...

Yes, she reported the income. She got a 1099 from one referee association and she reported the cash on the field from the other association.

Let’s say I only started reffing this year and haven’t gotten the chance to file highschool earnings and club games yet, I’d suppose they’d still take that into consideration?

I don’t know. It would be worth trying.

I got my CA EDD paperwork yesterday to fill out and turn in. I'll believe it when I see it if I actually get a check

The PUA rules ( PUA FAQs ) are in a referee's favor if the income has been reported to CA for income tax purposes. When you claim PUA from the California EDD they'll check various sources to verify your income. If they can't determine income then they'll ask the applicant to verify income with documentation. A 1099-Misc from Arbiter or a referee association or a copy of a Schedule C from your tax return should fill the bill. It's probably not a good idea to apply for PUA if you haven't reported the income. Given that the amount of PUA available probably substantially exceeds referee earnings one might consider filing an amended return and paying any associated taxes/interest/penalties for any previously unreported referee income and then applying for PUA.

My DD has already received several deposits to her EDD card. This past Tuesday she said they posted money. I wasn’t paying much attention, but I think she said $750.

The good news for refs is that not one has been stricken with Covid. According to the CDC, it is because their heads are so far up their asses, they cannot get it.

I recommend you sign up and do it so you can show us all how it is supposed to be done. I can't wait to learn from you.
