The top 8 go into the Open Division playoffs, the remaining 12 into D-I playoffs. Westview is on the #8 bubble, with San Marcos, Poway and Oceanside trying to fight their way into Open Playoffs.

Westview has two games remaining - Poway Wednesday and at Mt Carmel Friday. A win over Poway will help hold position for Open Division, but Mt Carmel is a D-3 team with a losing record - even a win against Mt Carmel will only be worth 44 points, below Westview's current average. (934 + 42 + 44)/23 = 44.351304

San Marcos finishes with games at La Costa Canyon (DI, 1-11-5) tomorrow and at Mission Hills (DI, 5-10-1) Thursday. Even 2 wins would lower their average.

Poway's remaining two games - at Westview Wednesday and RB in Poway Friday - are must wins to hold their lead in Palomar League standings and get a chance at an Open Division playoff spot. (926 + 48 + 46)/23 = 44.3525

Oceanside's final 2 games are against Vista (D3, 7-8-2) and El Camino (D2, 9-2-7) don't have enough punch to pull Oceanside up.

It looks like the key game is Poway at Westview Wednesday.

My understanding is that the CIF San Diego Section uses power rankings based on this years results only and is computed over the entire season rather than their level at the time of a given match. Based on this understanding:

There are several teams near the threshold for determining their level and the last two matches could produce a change in their level which would result in more or less points for all of their opponents in the current season. For example, San Marcos is 7-8-6 and two wins would give them a 9-8-6 record and move them from Level 3 to Level 2 for their overall record. The result of this would be that each opponent that played them will have earned two more game points for each match against San Marcos this year regardless of whether it was a win, loss or tie.

If San Marcos wins their last two games they move up to Level 2. Westview and Poway both gain two game points for their matches with San Marcos while Canyon Crest gets 4 more game points for their league matches with San Marcos.

Poway is safe in Level 2 even if they lose their last two matches so Westview can't lose any of those game points.

If Eastlake drops to Level 3 as a result of their last two games both Canyon Crest Academy and San Marcos will lose two game points but Westview and Poway will not be affected since they didn't play Eastlake.

If University City (currently 6-7-7) is able to climb into Level 2 from Level 3 then Canyon Crest and Westview would each gain 2 game points but Poway would gain 4 points since they played twice.

If Rancho Bernardo wins their last two games they would climb into Level 2 resulting in 4 more points to Poway for the level change. Since that scenario requires that RB beat Poway in the last game the net result for Poway in this case would be 0 points since Poway would have lost 4 points because of the loss. Westview would gain 4 points from the level change and Canyon Crest would gain 2 points for an earlier tournament game.

The #7 to #10 teams are separated by only 0.43 power ranking points. Eight 8 game points equates to between 0.32 (25 games) and 0.4 (20 games) power ranking points. A difference of eight game points is equivalent to the difference between two wins and two losses.

#7 Canyon Crest could have a change between -2 and 8 game points due to level changes of other teams in the next two games.
#8 Westview could have a change between 0 and 8 game points
#9 San Marcos could have a change between -2 and 0 game points
#10 Poway could have a change between 0 and 6 game points

I didn't track down potential level shifts of lower division teams that these Div 1 teams played so the impact of level shifts of lower division teams have not been taken into account.

Even if the #7 thru #10 teams all win out we could still see a shift in the power rankings based on how several other teams perform.

San Marcos beat La Costa Canyon tonight 2-1. It isn't showing in the power rankings yet.

Canyon Crest lost to Torrey Pines, which does show up. They are still holding at #7, but vulnerable to being overtaken by #8 Westview or maybe even #9 Poway if they lose at Carlsbad Thursday.

This this will be final? Are there games left that matter? Any underdogs?

This this will be final? Are there games left that matter? Any underdogs?

I was just considering who would get into the Open Division playoffs. The line right now is drawn between #8 Westview and #9 Poway who, coincidentally, play each other tonight at Westview. That game will also settle the Palomar league if Poway wins --

Poway 3-0-3 (@ Westview tonight, RB Friday)
Del Norte 3-1-3 (@ RB tonight)
Westview 3-2-1 (Poway tonight, @ Mt Carmel Friday)
RB 2-4-0 (Del Norte tonight, @ Poway Friday)
Mt Carmel 1-5-1 (Westview Friday)

Mt. Carmel also has a game tonight against Morse that will have no effect on the Palomar League and probably little effect in the Division 1 playoffs.

Poway boys team has only given up 4 goals in Palomar League play this year. 2 of them were at Westview last night as they lost 0-2. That puts Westview in charge of the Palomar League title - if they beat last-place Mt. Carmel Friday they are the League Champions. They also are more firmly settled in the Open Division playoff selection.

Del Norte 4-1-3 = 15 points (no more League games)

Poway 3-1-3 = 12 points (RB Friday)

I found out that the UCHS vs. La Costa Canyon is at 5:30 at UCHS. So both times were wrong. Club soccer may annoying at times, but it is much better organized that HS soccer.
