Playing time difference VS club?

This will be my older son's first season playing high school (he's a freshman). First difference I noticed is that the roster size is way bigger.

How does that usually work in high school? It is not possible for all the players to play on a game, like in club. So do they rotate the players game by game or is it more like professional where you have your starting 11 plus the 2 to 4 subs plus the rest is just the bench?

It all depends on the coach. I see some coaches that get all players some game time. Other coaches do not seem to care if all players get into the games.

They play 2-4 games per week. Hopefully the coach is able to keep everyone healthy.
Varsity- coach will play to win. The best 14 players will get the most playing time
JV- winning matters, but the best players will be playing varsity. Expect playing time to be pretty spread out.
Frosh/soph- hopefully your coach is giving equal playing time to see who is ready for the next level next year.

If your willing to give school name people here can give you the knowledge they have acquired over the years about that school/coach.

As others have said, quite a give zero minutes to kids and never explain this is going to happen or why. It’s ok, but there’s needs to be some communication at the very least afterwards. Also quite a few hugely favor kids that play for their club teams. Definitely do your research as, like with club, there are good guys and bad guys.

If you think soccer club politics are bad wait until you start high school soccer politics.
Think, U-little daddy coaches.
Don't forget the long ball game with your striker on your half, facing your half, of midfield.

It’s an interesting year for us in High School. There are Zero club coaches due to some changes in the requirements for the coaches (must be accredited). New coach has nothing to do with soccer and according to ”the kids” the teams were initially chosen by size.
Last year was one of the “my club players start” kind of deals.
I’m enjoying this so far.

We will find out 1st hand tonight. DD is a freshman and made the varsity squad (D3 school). Looks to be a fun short ride until the end of the season. Good luck to all the players. And stay healthy.

Well, by now you probably have had several games and a good idea as to how your particular school does it.

Since you didn't mention if your kid was on Varsity, JV or Frosh, the whole playing time thing can vary significantly, especially for underclassman. In other words, incoming freshman will definitely play more for Frosh team than Varsity or JV. Coaches usually place strong freshman (typically physical size but not always) onto either JV or Varsity and if a freshman is put on either of those teams, they will probably play some to gain field experience for the future years.

There is no requirement to play everyone. Many never see field time, especially on Varsity.

At our HS league, Varsity plays before JV so that coach can send eligible Varsity players down t JV games for playing time if they are on the bench for the Varsity games. As long as the player does not play in one already, he can play for another (except seniors that can only be on Varsity).

Question @Zdrone, the requirement for accredited coach must be your district thing and not CIF? Our coach is a college coach and a club coach but not accredited as a teacher in any way. Just asking for clarification sake....

Honestly not sure. I know other schools in our district that have club coaches. We had one previously but was let go due to ”the rule.”
There may (assuredly) be other things at play here I’m not aware of.
Ironically the kids are doing better this year than last; less long balls, more play out of the back
