League Game Scores

way up

SILVER ELITE
How about some reps. from individual teams post game scores to help us keep some stats? I don't believe SCDSL even keeps league standings? People say it doesn't matter, but they have to consider some type of competition level before they just place teams in certain brackets, don't they?

I saw ARod already posted that The HB Slammers won vs. Cerritos Slammers 4 - 2. Anyone else care to share their game score. This bracket is so competitive. Any given Saturday or Sunday certainly rings true!

2019 - 2011 = 8 years old = 7v7.

In order:
"... help us keep some stats?" No response.

"... SCDSL even keeps league standings?" No SCDSL doesn't keep league standings because of the mandate from US Soccer that essentially says the 7v7 age groups are supposed to be pressure and competition free and the kids are supposed to be playing for the fun and love of the game. Because the kids don't really look at stats anyway and are more concerned with their post game snack and just the joy of spending time on the pitch with their teammates SCDSL made the decision to conform to US Soccer and Cal South, and US Youth Soccer's mandate.

"...but they have to consider some type of competition level before they just place teams in certain brackets, don't they?" This is SCDSL and the decision to place a team of 8 year olds in a bracket is that of the coach and DOC for the club.

It's weird, because we track scores at tournaments. There are even trophies and awards at tournaments. We track scores at Spring League I believe? The girls know the scores and my girl does not like to lose and cares if we win or lose. Matter of fact, I have seen some coaches get aggressively angry at players during losing scenarios. I get it I guess. I just thought this is club and we're here for competition not fun and love of the game? This is exactly why we went from AYSO to club! Maybe I am alone in this mandate as a parent paying for club soccer, waking up at 5 am for certain games, and traveling all over?

Just curious if anyone else has interest in keeping our own score stats?

SC Blues Forsyth 3 - LA Galaxy SB 1

Thank you unicorn. Sounds like a great game! Please continue sharing folks, but please keep it polite and honorable for these little champions who all work hard and battle. More than anything, I want to teach my kid how to handle pressure and be ready for life that rewards hard work and results.

There's always somebody's that keeps scores and has a spreadsheet or something they share.

Does it really matter? No not really in the big picture at these ages.

If you get caught up in who's top 10 or top of the leagues at these young ages your on the verge of being too vested in the results of the games and that will rub off on your player(s) one way or the other intentional or not. Relax the kids know how they played and the results of the games if they care.

At these young ages Parents don't really add any value in talking with their players about the results of a game or where they are in relationship to any other team so why would the scores need to be posted or standing keep? For them or you?

I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing scores...it's what parents do with it that really taints it (arguing about whose team is better, we beat you by this much, etc). I used to track and share the 2009's scores during U8 and U9 and run it through an Excel solver algorithm to help get an idea where teams stood (similar to youthsoccerrankings.us). Perhaps a good thing was that we had something stats based and we had no back and forth arguing over who is top 10.

Totally disagree. Kids learn from their parents. You want your kids to go to college, get work experience, and become relevant in life, they learn because you brought them up to do so. They see their parents work hard and succeed. They see their parents wake up every morning to go to work. It's a learned habit. To win, you have to work and train. That is a valuable trait. Each kid may have their own path, but I choose not to limit mine.

By the way, my kid knows when we win and cries when we lose and NOT BECAUSE OF ME! I have no problem with losing to the titans in our bracket, but we don't train and work hard to lose. Anyway, just looking for scores is all for those like minded parents in here that feel like they are paying for competitive training and results. Otherwise, I'd keep her in AYSO.

I totally agree with unicorn. Let's not be ugly about this. They are all champions and work hard and deserve admiration.

There is merit in what jpeter is saying. Things need to be taken in balance...there is value in competition but too much emphasis on winning/losing will create problems. If you were to poll the veterans on the forum who have kids playing at very high levels (some on US youth national teams) they will say the same thing...focus on your kids individual development and enjoy the moment. I haven't heard a single one say "I wish my kids team won more games".

It seems the direction of this 2011 forum has definitely turned a corner. I have enjoyed reading different views of parents whose kids are playing club and once again I’m back. Thank you to the parents who have been posting recently your insight with class is appreciated. There are some very talented kids playing this beautiful game here in Southern California we should encourage their development and spirit. I look to the teams who put up big wins and only feel encouraged to know there are girls playing right now who will be playing for top colleges or even the national team in the near future.
This Sunday the Olé red team played LA Surf in a rematch of the Cerritos cup final. Field conditions were probably the worst I’ve seen (grass patches thick long areas up-to 3 inches tall) making passing a nightmare for both teams. The final score was 7-0 with Ole taking the victory. Continue sharing your awesome experiences. Thanks!

Is it possible that their kids worked so hard and naturally due to getting better, won a lot of games as kids? Isn't it also possible that working hard and winning leads to playing better teams and potentially up in age? You don't think Wayne Gretzky aimed to win every game as a kid or an adult? Competitive kids want to win. I never aim to lose, so why would I ever encourage not to place some emphasis on winning? Not saying it's everything, but I'm saying it should be a goal. If not, why do we keep score? Why do we have trophies? Why do we have flights? Losing is fine if it's against equal or better talent imo.

Winners play winners, so you're advancing and playing better players thus you're also growing in your pressure and challenge. We all have our own philosophy, but most winners in life don't like losing and probably never did. As far as developing, I can see you have to take a step back sometimes to build strategy/bigger picture skills, but I never want my kid to get in the habit of not caring about winning or accepting loss without learning what to improve on. Just me though. I can also promise you though that my kid never said I don't care if we win. Have a great day!

O.k, also not saying that I want losing to ever ruin their day or take away any fun. That will ruin the enjoyment and desire to train and improve. You take your loss like a pro and move on, but you do all you can to not lose. Leave it on the field and regret nothing! I have a cool down period with my kid after games too. Balance is the key for sure! Totally agree with that! My kid has had some batttles and tense situations with pk's and such that I could barely handle. She thrived and loved every second. She knows I am proud of her and love her after every game and always will regardless of winning or losing. Now back to scores.

I do have to say it's weird to see scores being controversial to 8 year olds playing club soccer? Losing teaches humility and is part of the game. We don't need any pompous grandstanding here, but losing is part of life. You need to know how to lose and how to win.

Thanks for sharing Bimmerdep! Tough field conditions make it stressful. By the way, is Ole coming to The Surf Cup at Thanksgiving? Would be great to have your team there. Sounds like you have a great bunch of girls that know how to play as a team. The best thing we can do for our girls is challenge and add variance to their competition. Going to be a lot of good teams going to that cup and they will get some good competition!

There's a difference between your kid being competitive and knowing their own results and needing to know how the other teams all did. That's just about comparing and ranking.

Hopefully for 8 year olds the focus of training and working hard at this age is development and having fun and falling in love with the game.

I'm so very grateful for the wise coaches and seasoned parents who offered guidance when my kids were this age. I'm pretty sure my dd's team only won a handful of games from u-8 to u-10. But during that time she was developing. We saw many players and families come and go during that time who were jumping ship to find that winning team - most of those girls aren't even playing anymore. I'm glad I didn't listen to those families that tried to get us to go with them. I'm glad my dd loved her coach and wanted to stay with her despite all the losses in those first few years. I'm glad she played for a coach who made it clear to the parents that it wasn't about the wins and losses - she made her objectives and priorities clear at the start of each season. And by the time dd was U13 or U14 you could begin to see the difference between players who actually developed and learned the game and those who had been getting by on pure athleticism alone. Things really begin to level out around that age. I know you are paying to play club soccer and you are hoping to have a more elevated experience than what AYSO provides. And yes - we absolutely should celebrate their successes, but my hope for parents of 8 year olds is that they can see the bigger picture and you're not paying those outrageous club fees to win games, but to develop your player and learn the game of soccer. The wins will come. And if your 8 year old's coach's focus is winning at all costs rather than developing your player as well as the players at the end of the bench, then you should run - run and find another coach and mentor for your kid.

I guess I'm weird, but I like to know where teams stand in rankings in our league. So funny, because I never thought this was controversial for club soccer? We've had teams travel 10 hours or so to play in this area. That is a lot of love of the game! They didn't come here to lose either! You can tell by how active and loud the coach was. He certainly wasn't there to lose! LOL! Your choice. Just thought it would be fun on a polite level!

Noone talking about winning at all costs. Just the goal of playing a game or there would not be a score or a champion.

That is a whole other issue for another thread if 8 year olds are traveling 10 hours to play a soccer game. And it makes me sad for 8 year olds who have "active" and "loud" coaches.

And the entire point everyone is trying to convey is that rankings for 8 year olds are irrelevant as that should not be the focus at this age. That's why leagues don't keep rankings for this age group.
