Default Jeff van Gastel - Living a Dream

This is actually a Northern California item, but it seems pertinent:

From the San Jose Mercury News, August 26, 2005, by Sandra Gonzalez

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercu...l/12482104.htm

SAN JOSE

Peninsula girls soccer coach accused of providing alcohol in wild party with players

Jeff van Gastel, a well-known Peninsula girls soccer coach from San Jose, faces misdemeanor criminal charges of providing alcohol to four 18-year-old female players.

San Jose police officer Gina Tepoorten said Gastel was arrested Aug. 5 on four counts of providing alcohol to a minor under 21. Tepoorten did not elaborate on the details.

Neither van Gastel, 33, nor his attorney returned phone calls Thursday night.

According to police and investigator's reports filed in court, the charges stem from an end-of-the-year party June 7 at which van Gasel admitted to police he served beer and margaritas to four 18-year-old women. The report also said the party involved strip poker and streaking nude, and afterward van Gastel had sex with three of the four women. The court file said two of the women made a sexual assault complaint to San Jose police, but no charges were filed because the women were not minors and police determined the sex was not forced.

Van Gastel was released on $15,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 12.

Van Gastel is the founder, president and girls director of the De Anza Force Soccer Club in Cupertino. He also was the girls soccer coach at Palo Alto High school for six years.

He recently left Palo Alto High to become assistant women's soccer coach at Menlo College in Atherton. The Palo Alto Weekly reported that his duties there have been suspended.

``That's some serious stuff. I am pretty shocked,'' said Ja'net Lawrence, a 22-year-old Menlo College soccer player who trained with van Gastel last week. ``We knew he was having family problems.''

This is a very sad situation for everybody involved.

I sure hope CalNorth has the stones to give him the lifetime ban that he deserves and does not let him slip back into coaching like CalSouth did for a former DOC/Trainer/Coach caught in a similar situation.
