My final word on this - if the player lodges with a teammate at the teammate's rented residence, the player should make at least a token payment as his share of the rent so that it doesn't become an unallowed benefit.

I'm assuming most men's programs (and probably women's) who have incoming freshman have the school set up housing in the dorms and normally place the players or athletes for that school as roommates because the school knows that fall sports start early. That's what I've seen at UC, public, and private schools.
My son's captain's practice was held maybe 2 times a week and it was for fun. They would even meet at the beach, so it all depends on the school and program. I think it's a great idea especially for any new incoming players to really get to know each other. My son is a transfer player and the coaching staff and school had nothing to do with his housing. It was expected that we find our own. He was also a "late" transfer this year and so many of the guys had already paired up for housing off campus. No worries though. He's enjoying his place by himself and because he's kind of a neat freak, he's not stressed with having a roommate who's not. It turned out to be a win/win. I really have not heard in men's soccer coaches setting up housing for their players. Unless that player is an out of country/new to the US player. I can see a coach assisting that player because he doesn't know what to do. Just my thoughts. |
