Default Chavez minister vows more Venezuela radio closings

It started as Fairnesss, moved from Localism to Diversity and settled on "Democratization"

Chavez minister vows more Venezuela radio closings
Sat Sep 5, 2009 10:14pm BST

* Radio stations to be pulled after 34 closed in August

* Critics say hits free speech, government says democratic

* Anti-Chavez TV network in the spotlight over coup rumor

CARACAS, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Venezuela will pull the plug on 29 more radio stations, a top official in President Hugo Chavez's government said on Saturday, just weeks after dozens of other outlets were closed in a media clampdown.

Infrastructure Minister Diosdado Cabello closed 34 radio stations in July, saying the government was "democratizing" media ownership. Critics say the move limits freedom of expression and has taken critical voices off the airwaves.

The powerful Chavez ally has threatened to close over 100 stations in total, part of a long-term campaign against private media that the government says are biased against Chavez's government.

"Another 29 will be gone before long," he told thousands of Chavez supporters at a political rally, without giving details which stations would be closed or when.

Cabello also said he was launching a new legal case against Globovision, the country's most prominent anti-government television network, accusing it of inciting a coup against Chavez.

Text messages circulated Last week in Venezuela saying a coup against Chavez was imminent. Other messages circulated among Chavez supporters calling for them to be on the alert.

The government quashed the rumors quickly and said all military units were acting normally.

"They (Globovision) aired a tape supposedly with telephone messages calling for a coup d'etat," said Cabello, a member of Chavez's inner circle who took part in the president's first bid for office -- a violent and abortive coup in 1992.

Chavez was himself ousted for 48 hours 10 years later in a short-lived army rebellion after he won office democratically. That putsch had the support of some of the country's television companies.

In 2007, Chavez took revenge, refusing to renew the concession of Venezuela's oldest and most widely watched private station, RCTV, which is now visible only on cable.

Chavez has long threatened to close down Globovision on similar grounds and the government has slapped it with big fines and legal cases this year. (Reporting by Eyanir Chinea; Writing by Frank Jack Daniel; Editing by Peter Cooney)

See I back you up in another thread and here you go with retread lables. I think it is strange that a guy who got appointed on July 29th has 9 pages of google links about how he is a Czar and out to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. I almost quit trying to find something besides the video from some unknown conference that I could judge the guy on and it really took 9 pages of searchs to find a semi functioning non biased write up about him. I bet half the hits were directly related to the Beck piece and called him Czar just like any moron who did not want to actually look at the guys record would do.

By the way he makes me look right central at best if not a right winger. That does not mean he has the power to change FCC rules. He is not young MR. Powell at the top getting all over Janet for her wardrobe malfunction. He is a policy wonk and yes he will try to push policy towards his point of view.

Calling people Czar and such just makes one look lazy and stupid. JMHO

I think the term Czar is completely appropriate. If you'd rather use the term "special assistant to the President" who bypassed congressional oversight, go right ahead.

Do you think that he will not try to modify FCC rules, which will promote "diversity" at the direct expense of Conservative Talk Radio?

I posted the video because of the "special assistants" reference to Hugo Chavez and the article that I origionally posted on how Chavez was eliminating opposing political viewpoints, by shutting down radio stations.

Ironic.

1. Czar is lazy.

2. I bet you a bag a bagels from The Bagel Lady he reports to someone other than the President.

3. What is the date of the video? It is relevant.

4. He will never have enough power to shut down Rush or any of them bright people at Fox.

Comrade, no disrespect intended.

It appears that Lloyd is referred to as: "the new FCC Chief Diversity Officer" I will no longer refer to him as czar, as it gives the impression that there might be socialist overtones.

In 2006 while at the liberal Center for American Progress Lloyd wrote a book entitled, Prologue to a Farce: Communications and Democracy in America. In the book he presents the idea the private broadcasters (private business) should pay a licensing fees which equals their total operating costs so that public broadcasting station can spend the same on their operations as the private companies do. By doing so he hopes to improve the Corporation for Public Broadcasting currently at $400 Million.

In other words, the wealth should be redistributed from successful private businesses and poured into public broadcasting through taxes equal to the total operating cost of the successful stations. That's just slightly insane since no company in America could survive paying Federal fees equal to their operating costs. But Mark Lloyd isn't concerned about their survival.

In Lloyd's own words:

“The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) must be reformed along democratic lines and funded on a substantial level. Federal and regional broadcast operations and local stations should be funded at levels commensurate with or above those spending levels at which commercial operations are funded. This funding should come from license fees charged to commercial broadcasters. Funding should not come from congressional appropriations. Sponsorship should be prohibited at all public broadcasters.”

I will bet you a bag of bagels that Llloyd, the President, or one of his other minions attempt in the next 12 months to quell Freedom of Speech through some form of "diversity", "fairness", or "localism"

More likely though, some "crisis" will REQUIRE the President to take control of communication.

Over-under on this chap...21 days.

The rest of his history will catch up with him. Just like Jones.

Put your head back in the sand, we'll let you know when it's ok to come up for air.

Happy Labor Day.
