One of the biggest arguements with ref's is consistency.

We recently watched a ref have a game of two halves. In the first half he let everything play on (pushing, tackling, shirt pulling, 10 yard infringement, language and the sort).

This was a Semi-final game and the hosts of the tournament were down at half time. Once the second half started the ref chanegd his tune. Almost immediately after kick-off the away team (Non host) get a yellow card for a hard tackle. Now this tackle wasnt particularly bad and by no means was worse than any in the first half. understandably the ref has a right to set the aggressiveness of the play. I personally think that because of the nature of the first half he should have given a verbal warning first in order to let the players know that this half would be different.

About 8 minutes later he calls a PK for a shirt pull in the box. The coach was furious as the ref was out of position (He was at the half line), the AR flagged nothing and the attacker whose shirt was "pulled" still maintained possession of the ball and got the shot off, that he missed wide. The whistle for this PK did not come until after the shot was missed. Later in the game the AR waved his flag for a foul and the center did nothing about it. The coach was furious because the foul was a tackle over top of the ball with spikes up that caught the player in the leg and he had to be carried off. When the coach questioned the ref on why he didnt make the call let alone card the player, the coach got yellow carded. Another player picked up a card for not obeying the 10 yards on a free kick, when in the first half this was more than common practice.

Eventually the host team won. I would like to think that there was no "host team biased", but I know that the other team felt hard done. I could see the frustration on the face of the players, fans and coachs. They outplayed the other team and in the end the didnt win. As they say though that is sport. I just want to air some frustration on behalf of the other team. What would make a ref change the level of agressive play when nothing seemed to get out of control or escalating. The change happened at half-time.

This is not a witch hunt and I am definately not claiming pay-off of biased or anything like that. No teams were mentioned in order to protect the tournament, and clubs involved in the game. I understand and agree with the concept that the ref has a right to dictate the agressiveness of the game and call the game as he sees fit within the LOTG.

I agree, consistency is a major gripe amongst coaches, spectators, players, and referees.

To answer the one question I saw in the above, there are times when it isn't until half-time that the referee can sit back and see what he's done wrong. The AR's will usually give their input as well. Referees, as well as players and coaches, will make whatever adjustment they see necessary for the second half.
