Blondie 07-12-2008, 06:35 PM Baltimore 4:1 Chicago Agorsor with all 4 goals for Baltimore...I guess that's why he is the Gatorade player of the year. Sounds like he is the real deal. My son said he saw him play, and he said, yes...he's the real deal. I'd like to see him play someday. Anymore scores? Academy Fan 07-12-2008, 09:35 PM Talking to my son after the game, he was more than impressed with how USSF is treating the players. Putting them up at the Westin (2 to a room), private tour busses to and from games, private locker rooms for each team, meals brought to them...what more could you ask for?? Kudos to USSF, you guys put on a first class shindig. The only thing he thought was a bit odd is that both teams playing against each other travel to and from the game on the same bus. Academy Fan 07-12-2008, 09:36 PM Ok, something doesn't add up here. The Concorde Fire team that LAFC dismantled (USSF's word not mine) tonight is the only team to defeat the Nat's this season...anyone care to try and explain that? Blondie 07-12-2008, 10:03 PM Ok, something doesn't add up here. The Concorde Fire team that LAFC dismantled (USSF's word not mine) tonight is the only team to defeat the Nat's this season...anyone care to try and explain that? You guys are simply better than the Nat's. That's the only plausible explanation. And I'm not joking. Sometimes a great team is a great team because of the coaching (I love your coach!) and the way ALL the players come together to be a "mean machine". I think if they had a game between you guys and the Nat's, you guys would beat them. Just my opinion. Robert 07-12-2008, 10:35 PM You guys are simply better than the Nat's. Are you that bitter that you cannot give an outstanding team a compliment? Have you seen the 18s play? Have you seen the 18 NT play? The LAFC 18's have a very quick style. Their players play in sinc. Their passing and reading of the field is outstanding. They have an excellent coach, and I believe if both were matched up, it would be a tie if not LAFC winning. I've seen teams that take all the "super-star" players and they don't play in sinc, and then I've seen teams where it's a mix and because they've been trained correctly and each player knows each other well, they play like a well-oiled mean machine. And that's why LAFC is where it is right now. Robert 07-13-2008, 11:35 AM Why "oh, brother"? Are you that bitter that you cannot give an outstanding team a compliment? Have you seen the 18s play? Did you have a chance to watch the game between Concord Fire and the Nats? If yes, how was the weather? was it raining, was it windy? please do tell. What formation were the Nats playing in? Was this their usual formation? Was this an away game for the Nats? Did they experience any flight delays? Did they get a full nights sleep or were there Concord Fire hecklers outside their windows all night? Were the Nats short players? Did they have their head coach there or did the asst. coach run things? Did they have a very demanding training session not too long before the game or were they rested? How were the individual match ups? did the US challenge some of their players by matching them up vs bigger, stronger older boys or were they trying to win the individual match ups? What strategy did the US come out with in the 1st half and did it work? Did the US change strategies in the 2nd half and if yes did it work? Was it the type of game were the losing team dominated yet on this particular day could not finish if their lives depended on it and all it took for the opponent was a (or few) breakaways and scored? Would you say should Brazil lose to T & T, US beats T&T so now US must be better than Brazil? Should I go on? Lafc may very well be stronger than Nats but assuming so based on a few scores is naive. Bubbalouie 07-13-2008, 01:38 PM LAFC 4 Albertson 3 I heard LAFC was down a goal with 5 min to play after leading at the half 2-1 Sounds like a thriller Academy Fan 07-13-2008, 01:55 PM Almost...LAFC was down a goal after regulation and scored 2 goals in stoppage time. Yes it was a thriller and I have full confidence that my heart will return to its proper place in my chest within the next 24 hours. That Albertson team was HUGE, I don't think that there a player on their roster under 6ft tall. Bubbalouie 07-13-2008, 02:13 PM the LAFC team manager called me...didn't quite realize the goals were scored in stoppage. ps. Wait until you see the Schultz Academy.....they too are huge! beautifulgame11 07-13-2008, 03:37 PM And wait until you see Carmel...they might have em all beat for size. Of course one game doesn't prove much, but the biggest obstacle in the MNT game for our youngers was the referee --in his awe at reffing a national team game, he forgot to blow his whistle when they fouled... I heard that this was not an isolated instance, and that the MNT players were a bit embarrassed by this. Against the LAFC olders, our 18s played in extreme heat on artificial turf and against the MNT they played in rain on a field of bushy grass. Both LAFC and the MNT were dominant in the first half and let down somewhat in the second half--or perhaps I should say that our team turned the tables in the second half (though not quite enough to win). I may have been influenced by expectations, but it seemed the MNT played more like a group of talented individuals while LAFC was much more coordinated. LAFC vs. MNT would be an interesting matchup and perhaps in the future this should be part of finals week-- bring in the MNT to play the finalists (and use a seasoned international referee crew). Robert: You "ass"ume too much. How do you know I've never seen the U18NT or LAFC's U18 teams play? Have you seen them? I have seen both play at least twice each. I have seen them at Nike Friendlies, and our own team has faced the LAFC team twice. I do get out and watch games recently seeing last night the OC Bluestars face Ventura Fusion PDL. I've seen multiple college games while my son was going through the college recruiting process of which I highly suggest for any player looking at colleges to play. You just like to argue for argument's sake and assume waaaaaaaaaay too much. Academy Fan 07-15-2008, 05:23 AM LAFC ended up tying a tremendous Columbus Crew team last night 1-1. The Crew was a very large and physical team and was able to shut down our usually prolific offense. Going into the final day of pool play, it's a must win for LAFC. A win by LAFC virtually guarantees a trip to the Chapmionship game on Friday night. I am sure that all of the local (So Cal) teams are supporting us in their hearts and minds, but it would be such a HUGE bonus if we could get ALL of them out to the HDC on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm to cheer us on. I promise that you will see some of the best soccer around being played. LAFC has had pretty good crowds all week, but a few hundred more would make all the difference in the world. Please come out to the Home Depot Center Wednesday 4pm and cheer your local Southern California boys into the Championship match. No rsvp required :-) See ya there SJC 07-15-2008, 07:16 AM Not only is the soccer exciting, but US Soccer is treating these kids to some great learning experiences off of the soccer field as well. Development Academy Finals Week in Full Swing at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. http://www.ussoccer.com/images/default/spacer.gifAppearance by Landon Donovan Highlights Orientation on Friday Night; Development Inaugural Season Wrapping Up in Exciting Fashion with All 16 Clubs Set to Play Live on ESPN Networks Later This Week http://www.ussoccer.com/images/default/spacer.gifhttp://www.ussoccer.com/images/default/spacer.gifCARSON, Calif. (July 13, 2008) – U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy Finals Week kicked off this weekend at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., with all 16 conference champions from the regular season playing their opening matches in group play. Finals Week is the culmination of the inaugural season of the nine-month Development Academy and will crown the overall champions in the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups. Before the opening eight games were played during the first two days of the Finals, the 320 players took part in an orientation on Friday night that included an appearance by U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Landon Donovan. The all-time leading scorer for the U.S. Men talked to the Development Academy players for an hour about a wide range of topics, including the process of becoming a professional player, how to consider options about your career, and some of the successes and failures in his personal journey. During the orientation, there were also short presentations covering several areas of focus for the Development Academy. U.S. Soccer’s Director of Referees Paul Tamberino discussed the referee training program, and Director of Scouting Dave Sarachan explained the process of using the Development Academy matches to help identify players for the U.S. national team programs. Lastly, Ivan Pierra, the Men’s National Team trainer, talked to the players about nutrition and hydration and also gave an overview of NIKE’s cooling vests that are used to lower a player’s core temperature during and after matches. On Saturday and Sunday, each team also took part in a media training session presented by the U.S. Soccer Communications staff, the first of a number of educational symposiums the players will have the chance to experience. During the course of the week, the players will hear from top level college coaches on the recruiting process for universities and how to position themselves in order to get recognized. In the highlight for all the participants, U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley will address all of the Development Academy teams on steps they can take to improve as players and ultimately try to achieve the goal of representing the United States in international competition. With both the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups entering their second match day of group play on Monday and Tuesday, all the squads are looking to build upon the progress they have made throughout the season. After the round-robin group play, placement matches will be played on Friday, July 18, and Saturday, July 19. All eight placement matches will be broadcast live during the two days, highlighted by the U-17/18 championship match that will be live on ESPN 2 on Friday, July 18, at 8 p.m. PT. The seven other matches, including the U-15/16 championship match, will be broadcast on ESPNU. During the first two days of games at the HDC during this past weekend, one of the most intriguing story lines centered around local squad LAFC, who have both the U-16's and U18's competing this week. Bolstered by raucous hometown support, the LAFC U-16s pulled off a stirring comeback Sunday morning, scoring two goals in second half stoppage time to earn a 4-3 victory over Albertson in Group A U-16 play. "It was exciting. It was nerve-wracking. But I'm extremely happy for the kids because they've worked hard preparing for this event, just like they have all season long," said LAFC coach Ted Chronopolous. "We fought until the final whistle blew and we came out on top. This game is over now, though, and we need to start looking toward the next one." The victory on Sunday rounded off an excellent weekend for the club based on Southern California. On Saturday, LAFC's U-18s were in scintillating form as they defeated Concorde Fire, 6-0, in U-18 Group B play. A hat trick from Carlos Alvarez gave the packed stands much to cheer about in what was the last game of an exciting first day of Finals week. Also on Saturday, the Baltimore Bays jumped out to an early lead in U-18 Group A with a 4-1 victory against the Chicago Fire. Playing in what was the first game of Finals Week, 2008 Gatorade Player of the Year Chris Agorsor turned in a performance to remember, knocking in all four of his team's goals in the win. In Saturday's early afternoon game, Colorado Rush and FC Westchester played to a 1-1 draw. Westchester's Jonathan Gallagher opened the scoring in the first half with a well placed free kick, and through some strong goalkeeping from Daniel Thau, took their slight advantage into the halftime break. Colorado Rush responded admirably in the second period, and though Thau was doing his best to repel attack after attack, Rush substitute Zack Foxhoven finally broke through in the 64th minute. Foxhoven latched on to a beautifully weighted through ball from Midfielder Morgan Sacco, and finished confidently to earn his side an opening day point. In the 4 pm game on Saturday, the Columbus Crew beat CASL, 2-0, with goals from Thomas Schmitt and Mike Green. Schmitt's quickfire strike in the second minute set the pace for the Great Lakes Conference Champions, while Green's fantastic solo effort five minutes of time sealed a deserved victory. On Sunday the quality play continued, with Carmel United defeated Schulz Academy 2-1 in U-16 Group A action. Goals from Taylor Anthony and Austin Oldham in the first half were enough to give the Indiana team a victory. Though Schulz fought back in the second half, a goal from Jabari Garibaldi proved only to be a consolation prize for the squad from Boca Raton. "It was the first game of the tournament and you always want to come out strong," said Carmel United's A.J. Corrado. "Today's first half was probably the best we've played all season. We got two goals and went into halftime with a lead that we deserved. They managed to pull one back, but in the end we got the win. We couldn't really ask for more in our first game." In the U-16s Group B, the spoils were split between CASL and Chicago Magic, the two teams fighting to a 1-1 draw on Dave Vanole Field. CASL came out strong and took an early lead in the first half thanks to Matthew Wescoe. Despite being outplayed in the first stanza, Magic regrouped in the second half, and eventually got the well-earned tying goal. After a heated goalmouth scramble, Christopher Meingast finished from close range in the 52nd minute to level the score. "Our guys were a bit nervous in pre-game warm-ups and in the locker room, but we talked about how important the first 15 or 20 minutes would be and I thought that we were very good," said CASL Head Coach Rusty Scarborough. "Credit to Chicago Magic, because in the second half they adjusted a few things, a couple different players came on and that turned the game in their favor. It was a tough match today, but we didn't buckle. We got a point and now we move on to the next game." In the final game on Sunday, PDA snatched a 1-0 win against Real Colorado. A second half goal from Robert Barrera broke the deadlock between the two teams, though PDA needed some late heroics from goalkeeper Rafael Diaz to preserve the victory. "It gives us good momentum going forward," said Diaz. "We got the first win, got the jitters out and hopefully we can carry it forward to the next game." The Crew gets a fourth chance that is put just over the croosbar. This all happens in about 10 seconds. LAFC's best chance come in the 59th min. when they use their crisp passing and 1-2's with a shot hitting the post. It seem Carmel was just looking for a tie in the second half. A short time of hope of Championship dreams when LAFC broke the tie with an awesome header on a corner but Carmel came up with the equalizer right away on a unfortunate set play. Carmel play the rest of out for a tie and advanced to the final. The boys played much better today and should be very proud. I know that some are heartbroken for being so close. The difference from being in the Championship and playing for 5th place is so close. The BU16 age seems to be very competitive with no one dominant team.
